Roberta Vinci shocks Ana Ivanovic to advance into the quarterfinal – Roger Cup 2011
Italian Roberta Vinci upset a former world number one, Serb Ana Ivanovic, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2011, a hard court WTA event held at the Rexall Centre in Toronto, Canada. She warded off early resistance to register
a 7-6(3), 6-2 victory over the Serbian starlet to advance into the last eight on Thursday.
In a day full of upsets and surprise victories, world number twenty-two Vinci carried the tradition and succeeded in stunning the Serb, ranked six places above her. The Italian last overpowered Ivanovic at Pattaya earlier this
season. She carried her winning formula at the York University and after earning this seventy-nine minutes success, Vinci lowered the trail in the head-to-head series by 2-4 against the Serb.
Both veterans gave their all in the opening set and played their best tennis. They exchanged two breaks from the fifth to eighth game and later held their respective serves to drag the set to a tie-breaker.
Vinci manifested a first serve share of 48 percent but registered an impressive 65 percent win on it. The Serb on the other hand clobbered a much better first serve share of 58 percent and earned a brilliant 77 percent win on it.
However, the Italian got lucky in the end as she dominated in the tie-breaker and eventually bagged the opener with a 7-6(3) win.
After Ivanovic held her second serve to tie the scores at 2-2, the Palermo resident Vinci blasted groundstrokes to wind up last four games in a row. She produced an equal first serve share of 58 percent but registered a plausible
67 percent win on it. In addition to this, the Italian saved the only breakpoint faced and capitalised on both breakpoint chances to her advantage to clinch the set with a 6-2 win.
Vinci is in awesome form this season so far. She displayed top notch performance to triumph titles at Barcelona, s-Hertogenbosch and Budapest and displayed great performances in other WTA events as well. In this Premier 5 event,
the Italian trashed Belgian Yanina Wickmayer and stunned world number one Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets to set-up clash with the Serb.
Following her victory over Ivanovic, the 28-year-old Italian will now square off against tenth seeded Australian Samantha Stosur who upset French Open titlist Li Na in straight sets to reach this spot. The Aussie saved the only
breakpoint conceded and converted three out of twelve breakpoint chances to her advantage to seal the set with a 6-2, 6-4 score line in one and half hour.
In other casualties of the day, Wimbledon titlist Petra Kvitova, world number three Vera Zvonareva and world number five Maria Sharapova all crashed out from the third round, making their way to the Cincinnati Open next week.
