Roberta Vinci splits apart Ana Ivanovic in the second round – Rogers Cup 2012
World number 28, Roberta Vinci, scuttled past the 12th ranked Serb star, Ana Ivanovic, with straight sets double bagel 6-0, 6-0 to reach the quarter-final stage of the Rogers Cup at Montreal, Canada.
On the eve of Thursday, both players were locking horns for the eighth time in their professional career and the former world number one, Ivanovic, led the head-to-head by a decent margin of 5-2 before the encounter.
So, it was expected that she will easily go pass the test of Vinci but the live play totally went other way round as the Serb failed to win a single game.
The opening set witnessed five opportunities to break serve for the Italian contender and she converted three off them with ease; allowed no chance to her rival and bagged three serve games as well to win the set in quick succession.
Nothing changed for the Serb in the second set as well and she saved a breakpoint but couldn’t hold her opponent from registering another bagel.
Just nine points were won by the Serb in the second phases of the match as her opponent grabbed 25 points on the other side of the court to register an iconic triumph against the 11th seed superstar.
All in all, it was a pathetic performance on the part of the Serb who has been decent with the results this season, winning 25 out of 40 matches played. She was extremely gutted by this embarrassing loss and wanted to forget the
happenings and move on.
In a post-match press conference, Vinci expressed her feelings of registering the second double bagel of her life in the following fashion, “I was very surprised. It's not easy to win 6-0 6-0 against a great player like Ana. I
was playing really consistently with a lot of slice - and she doesn't like my slice. I think that was the key. I've played against her a lot of times, and it was strange to play her when she was playing like this."
Next up for Vinci is most probably the sixth seed German star, Angelique Kerber, who was one set up in her match against Ekaterina Makarova, before the rain stopped the encounter on Thursday.
