Roberta Vinci stuns Petra Kvitova to win the title – BNP Paribas Katowice Open 2013
Italian veteran, Roberta Vinci, surprised everyone by defeating the top seeded Czech contender, Petra Kvitova, in the title match of BNP Paribas Katowice Open 2013 on Sunday. The second seeded Italian wrapped up her championship
victory in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-1, to claim her maiden WTA singles title this season.
Kvitova was rated as the hot favourite for winning the inaugural edition of this WTA event in Katowice, Poland. The left-hander Czech youngster displayed some stiff resistance in the opening set of the match but she was utterly
outplayed by the crafty game play of the Italian number one. Vinci registered a breadstick to conclude her emphatic victory and broke into the winners’ circle in the running WTA season. She was extremely delighted to win her first championship title of 2013
after winning three doubles crowns this season.
"I played a really good game today," Vinci said after the match. "Petra was playing very well and very aggressively in the first set, getting a lot of first serves in, but I stayed with her and won the tie-break, and things were
better in the second set, probably because she was a little bit tired. But everything was working for me all week. I'm happy I was able to beat such a tough opponent and win this title."
Kvitova didn’t lose a single set en route to the final, winning her every match in straight sets and convincing ease. She couldn’t display her true game play in the big game and crumbled to the accurate power hitting of the Italian
number two seed. She was off to a sloppy start in the match and couldn’t really gather up her usual pace at all, eventually succumbing in the second set of the match.
"It was a very tough match against Roberta today," Kvitova said. "I started pretty slowly at the beginning of the match and I was always the second player on the court because she was dictating everything out there - she plays
very well on the clay.”
In the doubles category of Katowice Open, the Spanish duo of Lara Arruabarrena and Lourdes Dominguez Lino won the crown.
