Roberta Vinci trounces Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the second round – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Italian tennis star, Roberta Vinci, stomped over the Spanish starlet, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, in straight sets at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Saturday. She manipulated a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the 24-year-old to book a place in the third round at this joint
hard court event held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The 21st seed, Vinci displayed exceptional skills to ease past the world number 76 at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory Event taking place in Indian Wells, United States. After earning this win, the Italian improved to a
4-0 head-to-head record against the Spaniard.
Vinci assertively entered the opening set and after capitalising on all three break opportunities, she bagged the opener by winning six games to three. The Italian lost her serve once but produced a better first serve share of 64 per cent as opposed to the
Spaniard’s 48 per cent. She also availed nine out of 14 points on it and dominated throughout the set.
Ranked 22nd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Vinci kept momentum running into the following set. Regardless of failing to save the only breakpoint she encountered, the Italian cashed in both break chances and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
She again clobbered a better first serve share and impressively marked 12 out of 16 points on it.
Next challenge for the high spirited Vinci is the 16th seeded Dominika Cibulkova. The Slovak registered a 2-1 retirement victory over her compatriot, Magdalena Rybarikova, to set-up this date.
The fourth seeded Dane, Caroline Wozniacki, will accompany Vinci in the round of 32. She slew the Russian rising star, Ekaterina Makarova, with a bagel for the third straight time to advance in this event. She lost her serve twice but dominated the Russian’s
serve, breaking all seven serves to seal the deal with a 6-2, 6-0 score line in 68 minutes.
“I don't like to be out there for too long if I don't have to," the former world number one said in her post-match press conference. "I mean, I like to play tennis and I love grinding it out, but if I have the opportunity to finish it off fast, I like that
opportunity, as well. This is a tournament I really like playing. I feel I can play well here."
The Danish number one will next face Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson who stunned the 26th seed, Monica Niculescu, in straight sets.
