Roberta Vinci upsets Caroline Wozniacki in the 2nd round – Rogers Cup 2011
Roberta Vinci upset the world number 1 player, Caroline Wozniacki with a 6-4, 7-5 win in the second round of the Rogers Cup 2011. The match was played on the hard courts of the Rexall Centre in York University, Toronto, Canada
and Vinci won in one hour, 52 minutes, and 35 seconds.
Inaugurating the set was Vinci who won the toss and served with unstable hand which made her strike two double faults, however, her opponent struck an extra double point though she smashed three aces.
Caroline managed to hit 67% of her first serves on target but failed to score in second serve which lost her points, along with a poor total return in which she won 22 out of 54 points, making it an average 41%, against her opponent
who was a barrage of powerful forehands and had an excellent serve which enabled her to achieve 32 out of 54 points, putting together 59% win in the total service points.
Wozniacki had a powerful serve and kept throwing well placed shots at her opponent which aided her to achieve 60% of her total service points. Meanwhile, Roberta Vinci built her confidence off the next few games, and with tricky
slice backhand shots that she placed in a sagacious manner facilitated in her winning 17 out of 42 points in her total returns and hence, won 40% of her total return points
Another competitive edge that Roberta Vinci got was when Wozniacki was unable to save 1 of the three break points on her serve and eventually endorsed a break point opportunity to Vinci, which of course she availed. Having saved
all her (Vinci) own break points, she left her opponent empty handed and hence, won the set with 49 out of 96 points against the Dane (Wozniacki), who lost with 2 points fewer than the Italian’s (Vinci)
Having won the first set, her confidence was at its peak and with a perfectly directed accuracy she committed zero double faults, while Wozniacki was flabbergasted and hence, struck 4 double faults out of which 2 were foot faults
while the rest were net balls and lost points to her disadvantage.
With a sturdy defence Vinci was able to save 50% of her break points and capitalized on a 100% of break points won, in opposition to Wozniacki who broke her opponent twice out of the four chances she received and back from 1-5
in the second set, she saved three set points - one at 1-5, two at 2-5 and finally against all odds to the her victory.
After the match Roberta Vinci was ecstatic with her victory over reigning world No. 1 and said, “"I thought I could win today - I knew it wouldn't be easy, but It was really hard to play with the wind. I was just trying to focus
on every point and when I saw she was making a lot of mistakes, especially in the first set; then in the second set I just focused on every point when I was down, trying to stay aggressive and hit some slice to her forehand when possible."
However, Caroline Wozniacki was disappointed with her performance and said, “It was very difficult with the wind but also the way Vinci was playing, and I didn't get a chance to really get any rhythm and she did better than me.
It's not fun to lose this one, but there's nothing I can really do about it. Just practice”.
Thus, she won the set by winning 52% of her total set points and managed to secure a berth in the third round of the Rogers Cup 2011.
