Roberto Carlos Calls Zinedine Zidane, ‘The Best Player He’s Ever Seen
Retired Brazilian International, Roberto Carlos, announced recently that Zinedine Zidane was the best football he has seen over his entire lifetime. The remarks came from L’Equipe and knowing the relationship between the top two
players from back in the day, the statement doesn’t come as a shock to most football fans.
The last time both players competed in an international match was back in the 2006 World cup. For what it was known, Zidane was somewhat responsible for crushing the Brazilians out of the prestigious competition. Carlos announced
his retirement from the team after a miscued marking on Thierry Henry led to a French goal.
Zidane on the other hand, soon followed as the loss to the Italians was a heart break and the gaffer went off with a controversial head butt to Marco Materazzi. The player, whose career came under the spotlight following the lifting
of the 1998 World Cup, was a team mate of Roberto’s during his time with Inter Milan and Real Madrid. The pair was a formidable force to be reckoned with. The two combined against Bayern Leverkusen to win the 2002 UEFA Champions for Real Madrid. Carlos set
up Zidane for a goal to put the Spanish Giants in the winning position.
Roberto Carlos plays for the Corinthians back in Brazil and he had a few words to share about ‘Zizou’, “He is the best player I've seen. Ronaldo was a phenomenon, but Zizou had something apart. Playing alongside him was a crazy
thing! Supporters arrived earlier at the Bernabeu just to see him warm-up!”
Roberto was a left back who played at Bernabeu for 11 years before moving to Turkey. Known for his challenging runs through the left flank, he was renowned for his fierce strike on a dead – ball. The Brazilian pointed out his old
compatriot as the best player of his generation and the next. He described the feeling of being in constant surprise when Zinedine played for the Los Blancos.
Zidane at the moment is working in Bernabeu as a backroom official and is much part of the revolution that is prevailing there at the club.
