The Italian Chelsea boss http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-Sturridge-c10076 has been diagnosed with viral meningitis but is expected to be fit for the Olympics.
The English striker was taken ill over the weekend, casting a doubt on his involvement in the Olympics for Great Britain. Sturridge was named by Stuart Pearce in the Great Britain squad but the news of his illness caused uncertainty over whether or not the
22-year-old would be able to participate in the Games.
However, since Sturridge has just a mild strain of the disease, he is expected to be fit in time for the Olympics and will most likely participate for Great Britain. Pearce seems to be aware of Sturridge’s progress as he has not yet named a replacement.
Di Matteo said while speaking to reporters:
“Daniel has viral meningitis, but I spoke to him and he feels better now. We're going to follow his situation and hopefully he will get well as soon as possible and be able to join Olympics squad.
He is currently still in hospital but I am optimistic he will recover (in time to play).”
The Blues boss confirmed that Sturridge was currently in the hospital, but that he had improved since he had first been diagnosed with the illness. The hospital staff is monitoring his progress closely and the club receive regular updates over his condition.
He continued:
“I think it's a question of daily monitoring his health, that's what matters most to him, his family and ourselves.”
The former Manchester City forward c*m winger also revealed that he expected to be fit in time for the Olympics and was hoping to participate for the Great Britain side. He said the club had been monitoring his improvement closely in addition to the outstanding
care extended by the hospital.
Sturridge was reported to have said:
“The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 medical team have been closely monitoring everything and they and the doctors and nurses at St Mary's Hospital have been outstanding throughout.
"Thankfully, I am starting to feel a lot better and I am optimistic about being able to make the Olympics.”
