According to the Italian, John Terry had done well the entire season; leading the Blues in all the fixtures. He revealed he believed the English defender had shouldered his responsibilities well and was everything any manager could want in a team captain.

Di Matteo was certain Essien would improve in the future, especially with pre-season training but refused to comment on his participation in the European competition final.
He continued:
Because he has been out for a long time it takes a bit of time to get back into the rhythm.
Next season, with a full pre-season, he will start to see some fine performances.”
