Lampard will be out of contract with the London side soon and so far there have been not talks of a contract extension with the 34-year-old. However, Di Matteo believed the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international still had a major role to play for the Blues in the upcoming
seasons.
Despite being 34 years old, Di Matteo felt Lampard possessed the quality to keep on playing for Chelsea in the new term. The Italian manager believed the English midfielder had proved himself last season, especially in the latter half of the 2011-2012 campaign.
Even though he missed out on a spot in the European Championships for the Three Lions due to a thigh strain, he is reportedly on the mend. Lampard is expected to return fully fit for the Blues as they prepare for their pre-season tour of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/United-States-c3034.
Di Matteo said while speaking to reporters:
“Frank is a very fit man and can play for many years to come. He was very influential towards the end of last season maybe playing a little deeper role. He made some key passes and he performed very well.
I was very happy. It depends on how he feels physically and mentally and I don't see any problems with him going on.”
As for being accused of playing defensive football, Roberto Di Matteo defended his side and claimed they did not in fact play defensive football. He revealed it was not possible for them to convert into a defensive overnight and that it was not their style.
He revealed:
“Chelsea have never been a defensive side over the years and won't turn into one overnight. There may be a tactical situation when you have to play like that but I can't see our club turning into a defensive side.”
The Chelsea manager revealed that the fans could slowly expect changes at the club since some of the players would be moving on or retiring and new faces would be coming in to replace them.
Di Matteo concluded:
“The team will change face over time as the players move on or retire and new players come into the team.”
