Roberto Ferrari responds to Mark Cavendish’s bitter tweet
Roberto Ferrari broke his silence and noted that he is looking ahead to beat Mark Cavendish in the season ahead, in response to the Manxman’s tweet criticising the Italian for riding irresponsibly during the stage three of the Giro d’Italia 2012.
"When I thought I could put this year's festival of sprint crashes behind me, I see Roberto Ferrari has signed for a WorldTour team next year,” The former UCI Road World Champion tweeted.
Cavendish blamed him for a high speed crash in Denmark when the Ferrari cut across the road in the final kilometre of race resulting in a massive crash including Taylor Phinney, Mark Cavendish, and several other riders.
Mark asked for the Italian’s disqualification from the Giro but the organisers let him ride as he finally managed to find his winning ways during the stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia 2012.
The cyclist is all set to mark his World Tour debut with Team Lampre-Merida in 2013 season and is looking ahead to challenge Cavendish on the UCI World Tour arena.
When asked about the tweet during an interview programme, Ultimo Kilometro with Italian radio on Radio Mana Mana Sport he noted, "That's Cavendish's character”.
“I thought everything had been forgotten after the Giro d'Italia. At this point I can only hope to beat him again next year," Itasportpress.it quoted him as saying.
"I apologised to Cavendish back then and I thought it was all over with. I don't know if he as just being ironic or if he's serious”.
“But you'd hope a rider has other things to think about during the off season rather than comment on another rider changing teams".
The 29-year-old marked his professional debut with Team Tenax in 2006 and stayed with the side by the end of 2007 season.
He spent a period of three years with Team LPR Brakes-Ballan, through 2008-09 and signed Team De Rosa-Stac Plastic in 2010 before signing up for Team Androni Giocattoli in 2011.
Ferrari’s 2012 performances include first place finishes at the Route Adelaide and the Fleche d’Emeraude along with the stage victories at the Tour de Taiwan and the Giro d’Italia.
Only time will tell, if the Italian manages to continue his winning momentum in the season ahead and manages to find the right form early on the 2013 season.
