Wigan Athletic manager Roberto http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 has hailed Tottenham Hotspur’s impressive performance in the 2-1 win over the Latics at DW Stadium. The Spanish gaffe has asserted that his side couldn’t cope with the opposition’s extraordinary start to the tie.
Martinez’s men slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat of the ongoing 2011/12 season after Tottenham ran riot and outplayed the host to secure a comfortable win.
Tottenham scored twice in the first half via Rafael van der Vaart and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Bale-c14422 before Mohamed Diame got one back for the host in the second half to end the tie 2-1 in favour of the North London side.
Martinez has admitted that the Spurs’ impressive start to the tie was just too good for his team to match. The Spanish coach hailed Tottenham’s outstanding movement during the whole 90 minutes.
The Latics boss believes that the Spurs’ first half performance took the game away from the host as the visitors gave a spotless display in the first 45 minutes.
“The way that we started the game, we couldn’t cope. With the good start that Spurs had, with the movement and manner that they controlled the game in the first half was very, very good and that affected us.”
Wigan’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Maynor-Figueroa-c25071 lost possession in his own half and Rafael van der Vaart made the Latics pay for their lack of concentration, as he opened the scoring in the third minute. The Spurs doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute when unmarked
Gareth Bale scored a headed goal.
The Latics boss has bemoaned his side’s lack of concentration, claiming that the hosts conceded very soft goals.
“The disappointment in that even when you’re not at your most dominant, you have to be able to keep a clean sheet. The two goals were very, very soft. It doesn’t matter how well Spurs played, with the first goal we gave possession away in the wrong area
and then we just gave a free header from a corner, so you could understand the frustration in the dressing room,” Roberto Martinez concluded.
After losing to Tottenham, Wigan Athletic are now placed 15th in the league standings.
