Roberto Martinez tips Mauro Boselli to shine after breaking goal drought
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has tipped summer signing Mauro Boselli to prove his worth after the striker finally got off the mark in the Latics 2-0 Carling Cup win over Swansea on Tuesday
evening. Boselli made the move to the DW Stadium in the summer for a reported £6.5m, with a reputation as a devastating finisher in front of goal. However, having started the season in the starting line-up, the Argentine lost his place in the team as he struggled
to adapt to the pace and finesse of the Premier League. But Martinez insists his big-money summer recruit will be a “real asset” to the club and that the player just needs time in order to find his feet.
"You can see Mauro (Boselli) is a really confident finisher. A goalscorer in football is expensive and the hardest thing to find. He is a real asset to our football club but we need to
be patient and fair with him. He is coming from a different league, different environment, different culture. If you look at the way he has adapted, the work-rate, the way he took the goal, it is very pleasing. I am sure Wigan Athletic fans will see the best
of him very soon,” Martinez explained.
Boselli’s goalscoring record at his previous club certainly suggests he knows where the goal is, but replicating that in the Premier League is completely different to hitting goals in
the Argentine leagues. There have been numerous South American strikers who have struggled on English shores – Diego Forlan and Julio Baptista just two who have outstanding records elsewhere, but struggled with the demands of the Premier League. Boselli needs
time to adapt, but fans can be unforgiving, especially when large sums of money are involved. Tuesday night’s goal will have settled some nerves though, and the player will be hoping he can take that confidence into league encounters.
