After four years in charge at Tottenham Hotspur, English boss Harry Redknapp was relieved of his duties as the manager of the club. It came as surprise as he had led the Spurs to a fourth place finish in the English Premier League and had only lost out on
the UEFA Champions League spot since http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 had won the European trophy.
The Spurs are now looking to bring in a replacement, and so far have been linked with Rafael Benitez, Roberto http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 with Wigan Athletic.
It is rumoured that Tottenham Hotspur will attempt to bring in Martinez, but according to Whelan, it was highly unlikely that the manager would leave Wigan Athletic in favour of the London side. If that is the case then Tottenham Hotspur will be the second
club he snubs.
Prior to Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in him, Martinez was approached by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809. The Reds sacked Kenny Dalglish at the end of the season after a disappointing eighth place finish and were on the look-out for a replacement and their first choice was Martinez.
However, the 38-year-old Spaniard rejected a move to Liverpool and instead chose to stay on with Wigan Athletic. Whelan confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur had not yet approached Martinez and that he expected to be informed if and when they did.
He urged the Spurs to turn their attention elsewhere, since he was certain Martinez would not be leaving the club in the near future. Whelan said in an interview:
“I have not been approached, and Roberto has not been approached. He is so honest that he would tell me the minute that he has.
I think it's pie in the sky that Spurs want Roberto. It seems that way as they have made no approach.
That's not to say that they won't, but I hope that Spurs go for David Moyes and leave us alone.”
