Roberto Pavoni clinches Men’s 400m IM gold: Day one – British Gas Swimming Nationals
Roberto Pavoni of Loughborough University clinched gold medal of the Men’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on first day of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Nationals at the London Aquatics Centre on Saturday, March 3.
The British Gas Championships are acting as a Selection Trials for the national team to the upcoming home Olympic Games.
With his gold winning effort in the opening event of the meet, the 20-year-old Pavoni has confirmed his spot in the British team to the London Olympics as his effort was well under the Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) A-Time Qualification
Standard of 4 minutes and 16.46 seconds.
Pavoni clocked a wonderful time of 4 minutes and 12.43 seconds for gold medal. His scintillating effort remained nearly two seconds ahead of his team-member, Joseph Roebuck, who clinched silver medal of the discipline with an effort of 4 minutes and 14.48
seconds. He was trailed by Matthew Johnson of Co Sheffield, who was 2.05 seconds slower from his former finisher and posted a time of 4 minutes and 16.53 seconds for bronze medal.
Next was the Men’s open 400m freestyle playoff, where Robert Renwick of Co Glasgow ended his swim in a time of 3 minutes and 46.73 seconds for gold medal. His commendable effort remained nearly two seconds ahead of David Carry of Stockport, who followed
him on the medal rostrum for silver medal with the timing of 3 minutes and 48.36 seconds.
Ieuan Lloyd of Co Cardiff remained just 0.50 seconds slower from his preceding finisher and emerged on the finishing end for bronze medal by posting 3 minutes and 48.86 seconds.
Subsequently, Hannah Miley of Garioch proved her mettle in the playoff of Women’s 400m IM. Miley remained prominently ahead of her challengers and paved her way to the top of victory stand for gold medal by submitting 4 minutes and 32.67 seconds.
She was followed by Aimee Willmott of Middlesbrough and Stephanie Proud of Chester, who won second and third positions with timings of 4:37.48 and 4:43.10 minutes, respectively.
In addition, the championship will conclude on March 10 after the completion of all scheduled even in Men and Women’s category.
