The final match of the Guatemala Gatorade Beach Volleyball Tournament recently took place between the duo of Roberto Rodriguez and Pablo Guzman from Puerto Rico and the American pair of Tony Pray and John Heagy.
The winner of the match was decided after two sets as the Puerto Ricans made a clean sweep over their American counter parts in order to seize the title of the tournament. The scoreboard showed the following final set scores: 21-16 and 21-19.
Rodriguez expressed himself in the following manner after earning Puerto Rico the title of the championship for the second time consecutively, “I am glad for Puerto Rico, we are preparing for the Olympic qualifier and that’s why we’re using different combinations;
Puerto Rico’s complete team will travel to Boca Chica for the third stop of the circuit. We are making history in the circuit, we hope to continue with good results.”
The first set of the match saw the Puerto Ricans speeding off with a lead from the start of the opening set. The Americans tried to close in the gap at one point but they could not reach close enough to present a real challenge to the tough Puerto Rican
duo. As a result, the first set of the match was bagged easily by the Puerto Ricans at 21-16.
The start of the second set saw the Americans gather their motivation and come onto the court with determination which enabled them to hold their ground for some time. However, the Americans could not stand the heat of the competition brought on by the Puerto
Ricans and started to linger back in the middle of the second set. As a result, the Puerto Ricans took off towards another win that was accomplished at 21-19 and which also gave them the champion’s title of the tournament.
With the United States of America taking the silver medal in the competition, the bronze medal was taken home by Guatemala. The two players who represented Guatemala and won the third slot in the tournament were Andy Leonardo and Erick Garrido who successfully
defeated William Sanchez and German Recio from Dominican Republic.
