Roberto Vasquez nails Mario Briones to grab the vacant WBA super bantamweight gold – Boxing News
Roberto Vasquez, the former WBA World flyweight champion, collected a unanimous decision win by just an inch over the Mexican Mario Briones, the current WBC FECOMBOX super bantamweight champion, and became the WBA Fedelatin super bantamweight champion, in
an 11-round skirmish held on March 30, 2012.
The above bout headlined the pay-per-view which was promoted by the trio of Carlos Gonzalez of Pro Stars Boxing, Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing LLC, and Carlos Gonzalez of Best Box.
The ring for the epic Friday night show was stretched at Arena Roberto Duran situated in Panama City, Panama and the night was co-headlined by the WBC Latino light middleweight championship bout between Azael Cosio and Tomas Mendez.
As predicted before, the bout did excite the whole crowd and made the whole arena spell bound. Roberto’s win by mere 1 or two points is ample proof of the fact that Mario did not go easy on the experienced Vasquez and gave him a real tough 11-round wild
ride of his career.
Roberto, 28, was entering in the ring with an experience of 35 bouts in his gloves and arms. The Panamanian proud emerged victorious in 30 skirmishes and collected a huge 21 wins by knockout.
As far as the experience and knockout proficiency is concerned, the battle was already won by Roberto. His Friday night opponent, Mario, was entering in his career’s 24th bout and boasted a total 21 wins, 15 of them by knockout, in his resume.
Mario who has lost just one bout in his career, went one-on-one with AJ Banal to grab his WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight gold, though the attempt was unsuccessful yet the skirmish proved the 26-year-old Mexican’s concrete determination of becoming a champion.
Mario had two advantages in his gear, one his huge height and the other a recent fourth round knockout win over Octavio Hurtado Ascencio. The bout started and Mario used his height emphatically to throw powerful jabs from a considerable distance.
In all the 11 rounds, the duo connected well targeted punches but Roberto emerged as the better man who used his inside out strategy and penetrated Mario’s defence effectively to rattle the Mexican’s chin and senses.
Both men collected much praise from the crowd but Roberto was the one who grabbed the vacant gold and overcame his last bout loss. Vasquez, infamous as ‘La Arana’ or ‘The Spider’, collected 106.5-105.5, 105.5-104.5, and 107-104.5 score on the three cards.
Roberto, the proud owner of the WBA Fedelatin super bantamweight gold, now has 30 wins in his account out of a total 35 and Mario, also known as the ‘Maca, has collected his career’s second defeat and now has 21 wins, two losses, and one draw decision in
his resume.
