Roberto will be worth more than €8.6 million, says Benfica President Luis Vieira - Report
Benfica supremo Luis Vieira has predicted that in the upcoming seasons, former goalkeeper Roberto will prove to be worth more than the €8.6 million paid by Real Zaragoza for his services.
The Spanish U-21 International played for the Eagles for only one season after being signed from Atletico Madrid in a €8.5 million deal. However, his stint at Estadio da Luz was blighted with errors and tarnished his once fine reputation.
Roberto conceded more than 6 goals during his first three games and thus was relegated to the bench. He then rose to fame after taking to the pitch as a substitute during the game against Vitoria Setubal and stopped a penalty kick to lead his side to a comfortable
3-0 win.
Although he has shown glimpses of his potential over the course of the 2010/2011 Portuguese Primeira Liga season, the shot-stopper could not really adjust to his new surroundings and it stunted his growth as a player.
In a bid to further his career and be in contention for a place in the national team, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 agreed to a switch to Real Zaragoza, with whom he played on loan before coming to Lisbon.
While the transfer fee saw Benfica net €8.6 million and earn a €100,000 profit on their investment, Reds chief Luis Vieira claims that the La Roja International is worth more and will prove his mettle in the near future.
"Roberto will be worth much more than that for which sold."
Vieira also revealed that the former Recreativo man was an undoubted valuable asset to the club but was an unfortunate casualty of the situation and said that he would go on to cement his place among the great goalkeepers.
"Roberto was a victim of circumstances, but his value was in never in question.”
"Within a very short time, he will be one of the best players in the world,” said the official.
While the Spaniard failed to impress fans and critics alike during his stint at the Lisbon outfit, he still possesses great talent and could yet turn into a great goalie in his native country, just like Luis Vieira predicts he will.
