Robin Gonansa, Chao Huang march into second stage of qualifying round – Singapore Open Update
Men’s Doubles team Robin Gonansa-Chao Huang stepped forward in qualifying round of Li Ning Singapore Open after casting out Yogendran Khrishnan-Kay Bin Yeoh in opening match on June 19, 2012.
The local pair took just 32 minutes in Singapore Indoor stadium to register a winning total of 19-21, 21-17 and 21-14.
Now they will be looking to seal final victory over compatriot duo Pribadi Setia Atmaja-H C Jeffrey Wong in second stage of qualifying round.
Though, Robin Gonansa and Chao Huang had a rough start in their opening match of home event but they made amends in last two sets and kept their country’s hopes alive.
Meanwhile, the opposing team Yogendran Khrishnan-Kay Bin Yeoh could not find their lost chemistry and surrendered despite of winning first part of the battle.
The Malaysians remained under pressure in the beginning of first set as their competitors relished full benefits of home ground and crowd.
However, they perked up just before the half time and managed to gain a slight edge in 11-10 total.
Yogendran and Kay Bin struggled in third quarter also as they stayed down until 14-17 but then four uninterrupted rallies helped them in rising from the dust.
They reached at a respectable position of 18 and capitalised this by registering concluding margin of 21-19.
Next game brought both teams at same level as the natives dominated in all areas of game and bagged a vital match point.
The twosome of Robin Gonansa and Chao Huang gained an immediate advantage with 5-1 score and then doubled the impact by reaching at 9-4. They finished first half with five-point difference in 11-6.
After mid-game break, they continued with same pace and left their challengers far behind with 17-12. The opposing team Yogendran-Kay Bin never came out of this deficit and knelt down after reading decisive figure of 17-21.
Third and final set remained interesting just until 6-6 as it completely turned one-sided contest later. The Singaporean couple established their grip with 11-7 until half time.
They struck hard in last part of the decider and sealed a fabulous victory with final result of 21-14.
