Singapore’s Robin Gonansa continued his winning streak as he defeated Israel’s Misha Zilberman, in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 at the 2011 Russian Open Grand Prix Gold, in Russia, on Thursday, June 30, 2011.
The Singaporean shuttler, who is presently World Number 151 in the Men’s Singles world standings, thrashed Zilberman and proved that his victory over top seed, Ville Lang of Finland, in the second round was not a fluke. Gonansa took 41 minutes to chuck out
Zilberman in a straight-set match.
Gonansa delivered a superb performance in the third round of the event by playing top-class badminton. He started his campaign against Zilberman in a highly aggressive manner, as he was moving very fast in all areas of the court. He picked the bird very
early from the net and his powerful smashes put his opponent in trouble.
Until the break in the opening game, the Singaporean was in complete control of the set by reaching at 11-8. He continued playing aggressive game after the break and stretched the gap of points against a shaky Zilberman, who made many errors in the set.
Gonansa won the game with a decent score of 21-17, in 23 minutes.
The second set was easy for the Singaporean as his opponent became a little slow in his movement in the court. Gonansa put more pressure on Zilberman by keeping his pace at maximum level and maintained a good lead from the start of the game. He was leading
the set with a four-point gap of 11-7.
After the break, Gonansa maintained his control over the game by playing smart badminton at the net. Zilberman had no answer to the accurate placement of strokes by the Singaporean, who finished the second game with a big difference of 21-14, in 18 minutes.
The concluding result of this straight-set 41-minute contest was 21-17 and 21-14.
In the quarter-final of the event, Gonansa will take on China’s Wenlong Zhou, who got rid of Ivan Sozonov of Russia, in their third round match.
