Robin Haase, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez proceed to the second round of Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell
Robin Haase ousts Flavio Cipolla 6-4, 6-3
World number 59 Robin Haase of Netherlands prevailed over world number 161 Flavio Cipolla of Italy in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the first round at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Monday.
Haase and Cipolla broke each other on a number of occasions in the opening set. However, Haase claimed the decisive break in the ninth game, winning the first set 6-4.
The Dutch hit a single ace and two double faults in the opening set. Haase delivered 62 percent of the first serves, winning 52 percent of the points on them in the first set. The 24-year-old won three of the seven break points
he received in the opening set.
Haase needed a single break of serve in the second set to win it 6-3. The Dutch fired a single ace and 53 percent of the first serves in the second set. Haase won 71 percent of the first service points in the second set. The right-handed
claimed the only break point he received in the second set. On the other hand, Cipolla failed to convert any of the three break points he received in the second set.
The Dutch is slated to meet French Gael Monfils in the round of 32. Monfils, seeded seventh at the event, received a bye in the opening round.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez defeats Denis Istomin 7-6(6), 6-3
Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, ranked 26th in the world, rallied past world number 55 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in straight sets 7-6(6), 6-3 to qualify for the second round. The Spanish took one hour and 33 minutes
to undo his opponent.
Garcia-Lopez and Istomin exchanged a couple of breaks of serve in the first twelve games of the opening set, levelling the score at 6-6 to force a tie-break. The Spaniard clinched a single mini-break in the tie-break, winning it
8-6.
The 27-year-old was lucky to win despite serving quite badly as he committed four double faults in the first set. The Spaniard delivered 64 percent of the first serves, converting 76 percent of them into points in the opening set.
Garcia-Lopez saved three of the five break points he faced in the first set. While, Istomin managed to save two of the four break points in the opening set.
The Spaniard broke his opponent in the eighth game and held his serve in the next game to win the second set 6-3. The six feet two inches tall hit 71 percent of the first serves, winning 59 percent of the points on them in the
second set.
Garcia-Lopez will face either his compatriot Feliciano Lopez or Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan in the second round.
