Robin Haase sails past Marco Chiudinelli into 2nd round – Davidoff Swiss Indoors 2011
Dutch number one, Robin Haase overwhelmed resilience by the Swiss lucky loser, Marco Chiudinelli after dominating in the final set tie-breaker on Wednesday. Haase registered a 6-2, 7-6(7) victory over the Swiss to advance into
the second round of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors 2011, an ATP World Tour 500 series event taking place on the indoor hard courts in Basel, Switzerland.
World number 40, Haase got lucky when the world number three and the second seed, British Andy Murray was forced to withdraw ahead from his first round match due to a right gluteal strain.
"I woke up yesterday and was really struggling to walk," said Murray. "I went to a swimming pool nearby and did some exercises and it felt a little better, but I was forced to cancel my practise yesterday. It is just a freak thing
and I have no idea how I did it."
Swiss Chiudinelli, ranked 205th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, took Murray place. He had played only six tour level matches this season.
24-year-old Dutch made quickly on the winning track at St. Jakobshalle as he cruised to bag in entire serves without facing any breakpoint. In addition to this, Haase cashed in half of the four breakpoint opportunities to his advantage
to clinch the opener with a 6-2 win.
He manipulated a higher first serve share of 68 percent as compared to the local star’s 57 percent and registered an incredible 92 percent win on it. The Dutch then put a cherry on the set by firing five massive aces.
Haase carried his winning ways despite a pessimist crowd. He capitalised on the only breakpoint chance to his advantage but saved only one out of two breakpoints came across. As a result, the set went to a tie-breaker where the
Dutchman dominated and eventually sealed the win by a 7-6(7) score line.
He formulated a poor first serve share of 47 percent in contrast with Chiudinelli’s 60 percent but covered it up by earning a tremendous 82 percent win on it. The Dutch also committed several errors and four double faults. However,
the seven aces he hammered comprised his mistakes.
Next up for Haase is another local hero, Stanislas Wawrinka who eased past Croat Ivan Dodig in straight sets to reach this spot.
Wawrinka took almost one and half hour to triumph over the Croat with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. He dusted away the only breakpoint faced and converted two out of four breakpoint opportunities to his advantage.
