Robin Haase trounces Fabio Fognini to enter round three – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
Dutch number one, Robin Haase, dumped the Italian star, Fabio Fognini, in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012 on Wednesday. He penned down a 6-4, 6-4 victory against the Sanremo native to advance into the third round at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Clay Court event held in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Monaco.
The Belgium resident displayed tremendous skills and abilities to outsmart the Italian in their first duel against each other. After earning this spotlight, Haase not only inched towards his second ATP career title but also booked a spot in the round of
16 at the Monte Carlo Country club.
Haase made a nervy entry at this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event and suffered the first blow in the opening game to fall at 0-2. However, he made a fitting reply after that and went on a four-game tear with two breaks of serve. Regardless of squandering
his lead in the seventh game, the Dutch remained focused and pulled out the opener with a 6-4 score line after capitalising on another break chance in the last game.
Ranked 55th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Haase lost his path again in the proceeding set and suffered the first blow in the third game to trail at 1-2. However, he quickly counterattacked and recovered in the very next
game. The Dutch then held his composure and not only plucked his remaining serves with poise but cashed in another break chance in the last game to clinch the set with a 6-4 score line.
Overall, the Dutch spilled more double faults and produced a lower first serve share of 57 per cent as compared to Fognini’s 67 per cent but impressively clicked 24 out of 34 points on it. He warded off two out of five breakpoints he came across and converted
five out of 11 break opportunities to his advantage.
Next challenge for Haase is the Brazilian star, Thomaz Bellucci, who stunned the fifth seed, David Ferrer, in straight sets to occupy this position. Bellucci plucked his entire serves without facing any real challenge and broke his rival’s serve three times
to earn the spotlight.
