Robin Kern downs Lukas Vrnak to sails into the quarters of the Boys’ Singles – French Open 2011
German Robin Kern warded off early resistance against Czech Lukas Vrnak the to book a last eight spot in the Roland Garros 2011, second of the four Grand Slam event held in Paris, France. He barely sweat in the final set to earn a bagel here on Wednesday.
Ranked 1138th in the South African ATP World Tour rankings, Kern showed exceptional skills to triumph over the Czech in seventy-five minutes at Stade Roland Garros. He slew Vrnak in the final set to pocket a bagel and earned a quart-final spot.
The 17-year-old German confidently entered court sixteen and held his opening serve plausibly. He then saved two out of three breakpoints with his superb defensive skills and converted one out of six breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to drag the set to tie-breaker. Kern dominated in it to clinch the set with a 7-6(4) victory.
Despite producing a lower first serve share of 60 percent as compared to Vrnak’s 69 percent, he registered a convincing 67 percent win on it.
Kern raised his level of game in the final set and played his best tennis. He unleashed flurry of groundstrokes from his arsenal of skills to reel off first six games in a row. The German faced zero breakpoint and converted all three breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to seal the set with a bagel in just twenty-four minutes. He also registered a much better first serve share of 59 percent as opposed to Czech’s 45 percent and earned a spectacular 90 percent win on it.
The Czech, on the other side of net, stepped off the gas in the final set to eventually exit from this stage of the major clay court event. He saved only two out of six breakpoints conceded in the match and converted only one out of six breakpoint opportunities to his advantage. Regardless of producing a similar first serve share and clobbering less double faults, he took no advantage on the German's errors.
