Robin Soderling, Venus William withdraw from US Open 2011 – Tennis News
Sixth seed at the 2011 US Open and the top ranked Swede, Robin Soderling misses his season ending Grand Slam after withdrawing from Flushing Meadows citing a wrist injury and a virus. Scheduled to open play on Court 1on Wednesday,
31st August, Soderling announced before his match that he would be withdrawing from the event.
Tweeting on the popular website, Twitter.com, the 27-year-old Swede said, "I am sorry but I just couldn't play today. I had no energy, had stomach ache, headache and talking to the doctor we decided that I just couldn't play. I
really hope to recover quickly."
Plagued by a wrist injury even before the US Open, Soderling had earlier withdrawn from the twin Masters event in the US Open Olympus Series at Montreal and Cincinnati. Having started the year ranked as high as fourth in the world
the Swede has slid down the rankings all the way to number six now.  The Swede is expected to make a further dive in the rankings come Monday, September 11th. A quarterfinalist here last year, Soderling’s failure to defend points here will certainly
be devastating.
Soderling was replaced in the main draw by Brazilian lucky loser, Rogerio Dutra da Silva. Opening against Louk Sorenson, da Silva made his way into the second round after his Irish opponent retired three sets into the match.
A hit at the minor tournaments with a few titles under his belt as well, Soderling failed to make it big in the Majors of the year. A fourth round exit at the Grand Slam Down Under was followed by a third round exit at the Roland
Garros summed up by a quarterfinal showing at the Wimbledon Championships.
Though Soderling can be expected to return to the world of tennis soon enough, the same cannot be said of former world number one and sister of Serena Williams, Venus Williams.
After a successful first round against Vesna Dolonts, Venus was scheduled to play 22nd seed Sabine Lisicki in the second round.  However, after being diagnosed with the Sjorgen syndrome, Venus has been forced to withdraw
from the event. The incurable immunity disorder has forced the American star to take an indefinite break from tennis.
Like her sister, Venus had been missing from action for a good part of the year. Following a fourth round exit at the Australian Open citing a hip injury, Venus only returned to the action at Wimbledon in June though she soon exited
early there as well.
In her statement to the press Venus said, “I'm really disappointed to have to withdraw from this year's US Open. I enjoyed playing my first match here and wish I could continue but right now I am unable to.”

Wishing her a speedy recovery, fans are hopeful the powerful American will return to the world of tennis very soon.
