Robin Soderling cruises past Albert Ramos into the third round – French Open 2011
Last two years’ finalist, world number 5 Robin Soderling of Sweden scored an easy victory against world number 117 Albert Ramos of Spain, beating him in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of French Open at Roland Garros
in Paris on Thursday. The Swede needed just an hour and 56 minutes to knock out his opponent in a one-sided encounter.
Soderling took an early lead as he broke Ramos in the second game of the opening set, consolidating on it and taking a 3-0 lead. The Swede maintained the advantage throughout the set and won it 6-3. The right-handed delivered three
aces and 48 percent of the first serves, claiming a staggering 92 percent of the points on them in the opening set. Soderling converted the only break point he received on Ramos’ serve and did not face any break point on his own serve in the first set.
In the second set, the Swede broke his opponent in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. The 26-year-old capitalized on the break of serve, capturing the set 6-4. Soderling fired six winners and seven unforced errors in the second
set. The fifth seed won 32 percent of the receiving points and capitalized on the single break chance he created in the second set.
After losing the first two sets easily, Ramos showed some resistance in the third set. Soderling and the Spaniard held their serve in the first six games and equalized the score at 3-3. The Swede broke the ice as he forced an error
from his opponent, breaking the 23-year-old in the seventh game and going ahead 4-3. However, the Spaniard was in no mood to surrender, breaking back in the very next game to level the score at 4-4. After that, Soderling grabbed two consecutive games, winning
the set 6-4. The six feet and four inches tall failed to save the only break point he faced but compensated that by winning two of the five break points he received in the third set.
Soderling is slated to meet either world number 29 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus or Argentinean qualifier Leonardo Mayer, ranked 217th in the world, in the third round.
