Robinho asked to come back to Manchester
Brazilian forwards, Robinho, has been asked by his parent club, Manchester City, to return to the club in order to discuss where he will go. After signing from Real Madrid for what was a British record transfer of £32.4 million, the Brazilian failed to settle down in the Premier League despite getting a very good start to his career, including goals against the English Champions, Chelsea, who had tried to sign him.
After former manager Mark Hughes, who had signed the player, was let go, Robinho failed to find a place in the starting line-up and requested to be loaned out to the club where he first gained recognition, Santos.
Although a loan deal was agreed with the Brazilian club, the terms were such that Manchester City were still paying the majority of the player’s wages, something which means that Robinho is essentially being paid by the Premier League club to help Santos do well. The men in charge at City seem to have realized how useless the deal is for the club and with the addition of a number of high profile players, with more to come soon, they will be looking to get Santos to either buy the player or look elsewhere for a potential transfers.
Robinho has stated his personal preference to stay at his home town club where he rediscovered some of the form he had lost during his time in Manchester and it is difficult to see how Manchester City are going to convince the troubled forward to remain with them.
After failing to perform with the Brazil national side at the World Cup and being infamous for his overall attitude, potential buyers will be very difficult to come by for Robinho. City, having one of the largest squads in the World, are desperately trying to get rid of some of the high earners who will not be able to start the games for the club. Robinho is one such player, earning around 150K a week, he is one of the highest earners in the world, let along the Premier League and due to his attitude towards the club, his future is likely to be under threat.
Robinho’s failure to perform in Premier League is further evidence of the inability of Brazilians to adapt to English football. Players like Ronaldinho and Kaka rejected moves to the Premier League in favour of the Spanish and Italian leagues because it is believed that the fast paced physical nature of the league hinders players who depend on skill and technique and is more suitable to those who rely on pace and power.
With the departure of a number of star players from the Premier League such as Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Arjen Robben and now possibly Robinho, it is becoming clear that the Premiership is not the league of choice for the best players in the world anymore and this has seemingly effected the National side as well, as they struggled to perform in the World Cup despite dominating in the domestic league. It remains to be seen whether the Premier League will take any measures to change this but as of right now, no such measures are being put in place and the league is losing out in popularity dad by day.
