The President of the Italian Referees’ Association insists that there is no proof that the ball crossed the goal line; voices his approval for goal-line technology and extra match officials.
President of the Italian Referees’ Association, Marcello Nicchi, insists that AC Milan did not score a second goal, and believes that the referee’s decision to disallow the controversial ball from Robinho is correct.

The Rossoneri wrote an official letter to the Italian FA (FIGC), demanding that new officials must be introduced into the game to stand close to goal-line. The letter was in protest to the controversial decision by the referee
to disallow a goal that the Diavolo believe was legitimate.
Had the goal been allowed, the champions would have captured three points from the match against Catania, which eventually ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
However, the President of the Italian Referees’ Association believes that the referee’s decision was absolutely spot on under the circumstances. Marcello Nicchi insisted that before the Milan-Juve incident there were no fingers
being pointed out at the referees.
He admitted that there was a gaffe by the refree in the particular match, and insisted that they took time to study the mistake in depth, in order to understand how it happened. The official insisted that the current situation
is completely different, as the ball never entered the goal and nobody can prove otherwise.
While talking to the La Gazzetta dello Sport., the former referee said:
“We all saw it, I was at the stadium, it was a plain mistake and the first thing we did was to study how this could happen. It’s like when the goalkeeper misses a save, an attacker a goal or a tackle that becomes crucial. Catania’s
episode, however, is different. Robinho’s goal was not there - no-one can prove that it was a goal.”
Nicchi voiced his approval for application of goal-line technology and hiring extra-match officials, to stand behind the goal so that such situations do not occur repeatedly.
The official stated that referees have always taken the criticism positively, and insisted that it inspires them to improve as professionals. The former referee insisted that the umpires are just like players facing good and bad
moments in the game, and should be treated likewise with kindness and respect by all.
