Robinson Cano booed during 2012 Home Run Derby – MLB Update
Robinson Cano struggled to defend his Home Run derby title big time as he failed to hit a single home-run in Monday's Home Run Derby in Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. The New York Yankees' All Star player, who hit 12 home-runs in the final round to set
a new record last year, had a horrible time on the plate as he went 0-for-10.
“It’s not like I didn’t pick him because I don’t like him,” Cano said. “It was a tough decision. I didn’t pick Adam Dunn, who has (25) bombs. You’ve got (Edwin) Encarnacion, who has 23. The bad thing is you only get to pick three guys.”
The Royals' fans were extremely pleased to see Cano failing miserably, especially after he decided not to pick Billy Butler for the Derby. It is not the first time something like this has been witnessed in baseball. In Phoenix, Prince Fielder was also treated
in a similar fashion when he chose not to pick the local boy.
According to sources, Cano wanted to pick Butler but just before the event started, he changed his mind. Royals' fans at the stadium did not like that at all. In baseball, cricket, football or any other sport, fans have the right to express their emotions.
They pay for the tickets and they have every right to react in whatever way they want to. However, the crowd at Kauffman Stadium took it a bit too far on Monday as they kept booing the American League All Star right until the end of the contest.
“You play for the Yankees, everywhere you go you get booed,” Cano said. “It doesn’t bother me at all. This is for the fans and that’s what they felt like.”
“I didn’t lie,” Cano said. “Before they picked him, I had to pick the team.”
Detroit Tigers' Prince Fielder won the Home Run Derby for the second time in four years to become only the second player to achieve such a feat. Fielder hit 28 home-runs in total, showing just what he is capable of.
“We talked about it after,” Butler said. “There’s nothing personal.”
Beating Jose Bautista in a fairly one sided contest, he belted home-runs all over the park but it was Cano who got the attention from the people in Kansas City. The local crowd booed loudly each time Cano stepped onto the mound, showing their displeasure
on his decision.
