Robinson Cano homers as New York Yankees humble Minnesota Twins 10-4 – MLB news
New York Yankees hammered the Minnesota Twins 10-4 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Monday, July 1 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
It was an important win for the Yankees who have been struggling to find any consistency in their game play over the last couple of weeks. A lot of credit should be given to the Yankees pitching rotation for showing excellent pressure handling abilities
in a high scoring contest. Manager Joe Girardi will be very pleased to see his team back on the winning streak but it will be interesting to see if the Yankees can keep up the good work to have any chance of winning the American League East Division pennant.
Twins, on the other hand, took another embarrassing defeat that damaged their record to 36-43. Twins’ pitching rotation should take the blame for allowing Yankees to score runs freely throughout the contest.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Andy Pettitte had a decent time on the mound as he allowed six hits and four runs in five solid innings to lay the foundations of an impressive win for his team. Joba Chamberlain grabbed his first win of the season after he pitched
the perfect seventh to hold off the Twins. Shawn Kelley, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera also made valuable contributions on the mound.
“We're not that team anymore that we used to have the guys that we could say, `This guy might hit two home runs in the next inning,” Cano said. “So we've just got to take advantage when we get men on base.”
“You hope that the hard work that they've been putting in starts to pay off,” Girardi said. “Maybe this is the start of something.”
“I feel very fortunate to be around for as long as I have,” Pettitte said. “To be able to be mentioned with Whitey's name is obviously always an honor.”
After Twins claimed the early lead, Robinson Cano smacked a two run home run to left to level the score 3-3. Travis Hafner and Chris Stewart drove in crucial runs to help New York come back from behind for a thrilling win.
