Robinson Cano looking to welcome Kevin Youkilis to Yankees – MLB News
According to a leading sports website, New York Yankees’ second baseman Robinson Cano is looking forward to welcome Kevin Youkilis to Yankees.
Cano, who attended a charity golf tournament organised by Boston Red Sox’s hitter David Ortiz, looks at Ortiz as his older brother. He has been attending the charity golf tournament for the last five years and no other player has showed up for the gathering as regularly as him.
Cano admitted that the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry exists more in the hearts of fans than on the field. He further added that he holds no enmity for any of the Red Sox’s players.
Cano made several jokes on Joba Chamberlain- Youkilis incident from 2007 and added that he will be the first one to welcome Youkilis in New York. If Youkilis decides to go with Yankees’ offer, he is likely to play third base until injured Alex Rodriguez recovers from surgery on his hip.
“It would be nice,” he said. “But those kind of things, I don’t think [Chamberlain] ever hit him on purpose. I would tell you that he would be the first guy who would be happy to see him on our team because we know he’s the kind of guy who would help us a lot because he’s been in a situation like that before.”
“I was surprised because he ended up the season good,” said Cano of A-Rod’s injury. “He ended up playing. It was nothing you expect, for him to get hurt and get another hip surgery.”
Coming back to free agent Youkilis, who has been offered a $12 million one year contract by the Yankees, is finding it hard to make the decision. Youkilis has been weighting Yankees and Cleveland Indians’ contract offers for the last few days and it will be interesting to see if decides to come to New York.
Indians’ two year $18 million contract is of course long term and Youkilis will not have to worry about becoming a free agent at the end of 2013 season. But with the Yankees, he will have a better chance of reaching the postseason, which he failed to do with the White Sox last season.
