Robinson Cano’s six RBIs help New York Yankees defeat Detroit Tigers 9-3 - MLB Playoffs

New York Yankees’ second baseman, Robinson Cano had an outstanding day in the first game of the playoffs as he struck six RBIs including a solo home-run and went 3-for-5 in the Yankees’ 9-3 win against the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium, New York on September
30.
In the first inning, Yankees and Tigers both added one run each to move the score-board 1-1. Delmon Young hit a solo homer (342 feet) towards right-field to give the Tigers a convincing lead. On the other side, Derek Jeter posted a tie run for the Yankees
when Alex Rodriguez ground out to third base and Curtis Granderson moved to third base.
The pitchers worked terrifically from the second to fourth inning as they threw accurately in line. Jorge Posada hit a single-run drive to right-field and Russell Martin doubled to left-centre but Jeter and Granderson both struck-out without adding any run
for Yankees at the bottom of second inning. Tigers’ short-stop Jhonny Peralta ground out, Brandon Inge fouled out to third base and Austin Jackson flied out during third inning.
Nick Swisher and Martin both grounded out in the fourth inning. Yankees went ahead 2-1 at the bottom of fifth inning when Cano drove a double-run shot towards deep left-field and Granderson scored the leading run. The batters smashed six runs for the Yankees
to raise their lead 8-1 during the sixth.
Mark Teixeira and Posada both contributed two collective runs when Brett Gardner singled off right-centre. Cano struck a solo homer (375 feet) towards right-field while Gardner, Jeter and Granderson each singled to complete a six-run campaign for New York.
In the eighth inning, Jeter added one run to give the Yankees a 9-1 lead when Cano drove a double-run shot to deep centre-field.
Yankees’ starter CC Sabathia pitched only two innings with an ERA of 4.50 and struck-out four batters. He gave away one home-run, one hit, one run and one earned run on his 27 pitches. Tigers were able to add couple of runs in the ninth inning to cut their
deficit 9-3. Alex Avila hit a grounder into fielder’s choice to short-stop and Young contributed a single run.
The final run for Detroit was taken by Miguel Cabrera when Ryan Raburn singled off left-field. However, the Yankees are now on top with a 1-0 lead in the five-game series at New York.
