I want to get one started at my school, it sounds really challenging to get it started though. I really need help with the materials needed and how much it will cost. Thanks!

  1. Depends on the grade level. I've held robot classes for students ranging from middle school to high school.

Do a search for First Robotics for some hints. Also look at http://www.parallax.com for some other free student material and supplies.

One good thing to do with younger students is split them into 2 groups. Set up a simple task like "a robot goes here to get water, then waters these two plants (which maybe desks or something in real life) and then returns to the charging base. Each group writes a "program" (move 2 steps and turn to 3 o'clock; or move until you bump into the wall and then...."). They need older experienced kids or adults to help get them started.

Once done, each team elects a robot and a computer. The robot gets a blindfold and the computer has to read the program to them and the robot must do what is read.

Very educational as far as how simple a computer program is (and how literal) and also the value of closed loop control.

    Good luck!

  2. Oooh a robotics club. That would be so cool. I used to be in one, good times. I think you could/should talk to your school principle, or possibly a science teacher, beacuse I'm sure they would be able to point you in the right direction for materials and the way to go by starting it up. I'm sure they would also help you with it because they would approve of something educational and fun like robotics.

Good luck! Hope you get it all going smoothly
