Robur Tiboni URBINO sweeps Smart Allianz STUTTGART – 2012 CEV Volleyball Cup
A semi-final match of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Cup was held recently which saw Smart Allianz STUTTGART of Germany compete in a match with Robur Tiboni URBINO of Italy.
The competition between the two sides was played in the German city of Stuttgart.
The contest between the two sides took a short time to reach its close as the Italians were able to assert themselves by making a clean sweep over their opponents. Despite the fact that the Germans lost the match, they did not go down without putting up
a good fight as each frame was closely contested.
However, the cheers of the home crowd were not enough to energize the Germans to secure a win as the Italians were able to end up on the winning side by bagging a win at the following final set scores: 22-25, 21-25 and 25-27.
The coach of the home team, Jan Lindenmaier, expressed himself in the following words after his team had lost the match, “Of course we had expected a tough game but the first set let us see that we had our chances, so I am a little disappointed.”
The start of the first set saw the home team take the lead early on and spurred on by the crowd, the Germans were able to extend their advantage, keeping the guests trailing behind. By the time that the frame reached its final stages, it was still in favour
of the Germans at 22-18.
However, the Italian coach Francois Salvagni was able to break the momentum of the home team by calling for a time out and when his side came back on the courts, they turned things around in their favour and won the opening frame.
The confidence generated by winning the initial frame made the Italians come out strong in the second set and take the lead early on.
Despite the fact that the Germans tried to fight their way back in the game, they were unable to do so and saw the guests win another set. The third set of the match was the most competitive but the efforts of the German side proved to be insufficient to
stop the Italians from winning the match.
