Rocco Mediate throws his weight behind Tiger Woods for his Masters bid
The big-mouthed Rocco Mediate is all out in support of his arch enemy Tiger Woods, who snatched away the 2008 US Open title from the veteran at the historic Torrey Pines event.
Mediate, known for his non-stop rant when given a chance, spoke highly of Woods ahead of the coveted Masters and termed him the best possible bet in this year’s showdown of the giants.
Mediate said, “You saw it on Sunday at Bay Hill. … He had a one-shot lead going into Sunday and won by five. Kind of eerie, isn’t it? We need to have Mr. Woods. When he gets to Augusta, if the ball is going kind of where he’s looking, everybody else is playing for second”.
The latest edition of the Masters this year will feature some of the top performing players on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), many of whom are more or less poised at the same place in terms of their grasp on the game.
World number one Luke Donald played exceptionally in the past year and is currently the number one in the world, a title he has earned primarily on merit.
Donald also has an excellent record at the tricky Augusta National and posted a strong joint fourth last year.
Also eyeing the top slot, is the world number three, Lee Westwood, another of the brilliant English golfers who played spectacular golf throughout the last season, losing his world number spot to Donald at BMW PGA Championship.
He is also looking for the elusive maiden major victory of his career and is adamant that he will be able to land the title this year.
Mediate at the same time, lauded the services of Sean Foley, Woods swing coach and said that he has done a splendid job in reconstructing the swing.
He added, “Sean has done a really good job with him. I want to talk with Sean; he’s figured him out. Not that he didn’t know it, but he tried to get rid of this other stuff that was in him before from whomever – and that’s not an easy thing to do”.
Woods will be looking forward to bagging the fifth major title of his career among a sturdy filed of fiery golfers from across the Atlantic.
