Rock steady at St Andrews
Robert Rock got his third round of the Open Championship off to an impressive start earlier today, the Englishman going five-under-par on the front nine after an eagle on the 7th.
It's quite a turn-around for the 33-year-old, who carded seven bogeys during yesterday's second round, but is currently three-under-par for the tournament, a score that sees him tied for 21st place.
South Africa's Charl Schwartzel is off to a similarly encouraging beginning, with four birdies on the front nine seeing him two-under for the tournament, tied for 29th place. Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen has also made four birdies to match Schwartzel's score, both for the day and over all.
Players are taking advantage of conditions that, if not exactly benign, are positively sublime compared to yesterday afternoon's debacle. But Rory McIlroy, so exciting on Thursday and so shellshocked after yesterday's eight-over, is yet to begin, the Northern Irishman set to start his third round at 13:10 this afternoon.
Another player rueing a second day collapse is England's Steven Tiley; Tiley was six-under after the first day's play, but only made the cut by the skin of his teeth yesterday after six bogeys and a double on the 11th saw him tumble to one-over for the competition. Tiley has begun today with a pair of birdies and a bogey after six holes.
Rickie Fowler is one-over for the tournament, having found just one birdie on his front nine today, while Luke Donald is on the same score for the tournament, level-par for the day after the first two holes. And Steve Stricker is one-over par on the day, two-over for the tournament, having bogeyed the 1st.
