Rocket Ronnie O’Sullivan earns semi-final berth after crushing Judd Trump: 2012 Welsh Open
England’s top cueman, Ronnie O’Sullivan finally ensured his entrance in the semi-final stage of the 2012 Welsh Open at the Newport Centre arena in Newport, Wales.
The veteran potter was quite outstanding at the table and had complete control over the game as well as the nerves of his opponent, the young Judd Trump, who was not able to produce much resistance against the Rocket.
The 2012 German Masters champion dominated the quarter-final match up from the start with the help of a sumptuous display of extraordinary snooker genius. The Essex Exocet is now looking forward to claim his second major event in a row at the start of 2012.
The Wordsley potter, with his 5-3 win over the young Trump, has turned the tables after he was defeated at the hands of the Bristolian in the 2011 UK Championship.
The first scrappy frame of the match was dominated by the Ace, Trump, as he moved within one frame lead at 0-1 after firing a nice century clearance of 109 points. The 36-year-old O’Sullivan did not take it lightly and replied with two cracking knocks of
101 and 88 to snatch the lead at 2-1. Before O’Sullivan could do more damage, Trump pulled level at 2-2 smashing an impressive 63-point break.
O’Sullivan made it 3-2 after compiling a stunning 139 clearance pocketing 14 reds and 14 blacks to nudge the youngster down. Mr. Haircut 100, on the other hand, was not having any pressure at all as he equalised the game again at 3-3 with an 88-point run
in the sixth frame. Until the end of Frame 6, the contest was a topsy-turvy affair producing more suspense with every passing second.
However, the former three-time World Snooker Champion made it easy in the end with two consecutive frame victories. O’Sullivan led the seventh frame 43-0 before Trump came at the table and tried his luck. The young Trump had two chances to grab the lead
but missed on pink and black in the first attempt while a long red in the second to slip down at 4-3 in the end.
The eighth frame was a piece of cake for the Magician as he breezed into the 5-3 win after potting a classy 61-point run in the last frame of the match. The Essex potter will be meeting Mark Selby in the semi-final of 2012 Welsh Open.
