Rocksteady reveals their next project – Video Games Update
Rocksteady studios have announced that they will be leaving Arkham and going back to the fifties for their next installment in the Batman games. The new Batman game will be adapted from the Silver age of DC comics.
Rocksteady Studios is based in Kentish Town, London and was established in 2004. The studio was acquired by Time Warner in 2010 but Square Enix still owns a 25 percent minority share. The studio was behind the Playstation 2 first person shooter Urban Chaos:
Riot Response (UC: RR).
UC: RR was published by Eidos Interactive in 2006 and was met with lukewarm reception from critics as it got a review score of 8 out of 10 from the Official Playstation 2 Magazine and is currently at 75 percent on gamerankings.com.
The game that put Rocksteady studios on the map was their second one, Batman: Arkham Asylum. The game turned out to be a sleeper hit as almost no one was looking forward to it. Arkham Asylum (AA) was published by Time Warner in 2009 and took gamers by storm.
The game was completely overshadowed by other popular franchises like Halo, Call of Duty, Killzone and Assassins Creed. However, the positive reception from critics after launch helped improve the game’s popularity and improve sales.
AA was mentioned in the Guinness World Records as being the best comic book video game and also won several awards including a Best Video Game Award from BAFTA. The game has an average review score of 93 percent on Metacritic.
After Rocksteady made their mark with AA, they released the highly anticipated sequel Batman: Arkham City also published by Time Warner in 2011. The sequel improved on the original in every way and was arguably the best game available last year.
The game was the highest rated on Metacritic in 2011 with an average review score of 96 percent and has managed to move over 6 million units since launch.
It seems that Rocksteady will be under a lot of pressure for their third installment for which curiously they have decide to leave the Arkham universe and opted to take a trip back in time to explore the universe of fifties Batman.
