Rocky Elsom wants to get back captaincy of Wallabies - Super Rugby update
Wallabies’ former skipper, Rocky Elsom, wants to get back the captaincy of his side after recovering from multiple injuries that ad side-lined him earlier. The skipper played his first match of the season for Brumbies on May 21 and was ruled out of match
after hurting his left ankle. It is feared he will miss all the remaining matches of Super Rugby along with the Tri-Nation series.
The Brumbies have got only four games remaining in the Super Rugby championship which means Elsom’s will be not be in action for the derby. His recent contract with the Brumbies and Australian Rugby Union will come to an end with the conclusion of the current
Super Rugby season.
Robbie Deans, the Australian rugby coach, has stated on record that Elsom will lead the Wallabies’ test side if he proves his fitness. The latest injury has put a huge question mark on his return back into the side. The Rugby World Cup will be kicking off
a few weeks after the forthcoming Tri-Nation series and the player needs to be in good shape to have a chance.
Mark Ella, a former Wallabies player, has already opposed Elsom’s inclusion in the side. Ella argued that the injured skipper should not be included in the side if fails to play Super Rugby season.
However, the flanker was hopeful to make a quick come back into the side and to retain the captaincy as well. A spokesman for Elsom told media this morning that he is only sidelined for the upcoming match against the Stormers and is hopeful to participate
in the remaining matches.
The Brumbies fullback, Pat McCabe, also backed up the skipper and said that he is optimistic about his rapid recovery. He added that Brumbies performance was down because of many injuries. He said, “I think everyone realised we had to take some pride in
our line. We've let a lot of people down this year and we know that. It has got to the point where we had to show more fight than what we'd been doing and individually everyone has taken it on to have more of a go.”
Tim Horan, Will Genia, and James Horwill are the other contenders for the captaincy of the Wallabies.
