  1. Both Paulie and galactus get a thumbs up for effort, but the simple truth is that Mike was a B rated fighter who hit hard and had no heart, who, when faced with opposition of any caliber, folded due to lack of character.  You truly insult Rocky Marciano with this comparison.  Marciano defined heart as much as any fighter in history.  Tyson made his living freight training C rated fighters, and they call the tactic a "Bum Rush" for a reason, it only works on bums.  When you try it on an even average fighter of any skill level who isn't terrified it doesn't work, Buster Douglas proved that in Tokyo.  Rocky Marciano was completely superior to Mike Tyson in every aspect of the game and would have totally destroyed Mike quicker than Holyfield did, Rock hit harder than Holyfield.

Marciano by ko inside six rounds.

  2. tyson in his prime would smash the he ll out of any of the old timers....no question about it..  it's todays giants who are loaded w/ talent that he couldn't beat....klitschko brothers and lennox lewis especially...but if you want tough...check out randy couture and fedor.....now they are truly tough.......

  3. To the question, I think it would be an easy one to judge. Compared on styles, well let's see Marciano did rely on his right hand allot and was always at this low crouch position which wouldn't get him by so well against a guy like Mike Tyson because of his height. Being around the same height but with Mike having at least 35 pounds on you is a big difference when seen in reality.

It was said that Marciano also used the peek-a-boo style but failed to utilize it through out the fights, he would always get tired towards the middle rounds and start crouching like an old lady coming in straight and wide looking for that opening for his right! I'm sorry but Mike utilized that style and made it look classy.

With Marciano I wonder how he would deal with Mike's body shot upper cut combinations? For the kind of crouch that Marciano seems to leave himself in at most times it would be considered a perfect entry for such a combination. I see it really hurting Marciano considering how fast Mike did it and again how no other boxer had ever been seen using it and using it accurately like Mike.

Although Marciano has been known for having a chin so has Mike against much bigger guys. Holyfield didn't damage Mike except with his head lol. That one hit that Mike did take and went down on he got right back up. I see Mike eating up every shot that the 185 pound Marciano gives him and still standing.

Also notice the difference in the counter punching department? Mike is a true master of it, the object to take a punch to deliver your power punch. Peek-a-boo consisted of bobbing and weaving while moving forward dogging the jab find the opening and coming over the jab with a hook.

Marciano basically is like a one dimensional fighter compared to Mike. For some reason I just don't see Marciano fighting with the 70's and 80's fighters because he was too small. Not only that but to compare him to a true champion like Mike in his era, why?

Marciano's style was "I'm going to hit you and hit you hard with this here right!", Mike will easily Bob and weave around those wild hooks and bombarded him with a combination that Marciano had never seen in his time, ever!!

A fighter like Mike Tyson is just too skilled and evolved as a boxer to be fighting Marciano. They are both around the same height but not in weight (Rocky would come in at about 185, Tyson at around 215), both used Peek-a-boo but Mike was better at it, both had chins but Marciano wasn't being hit by 250 pound men, they both have power but Mike has it in both hands (for me, Rock was overly reliant on his right, just like Frazier was with his left).

Simply put, styles make fights and Marciano's style would have been totally outdated if put in the ring with a Mike Tyson. Not only that, it would have been embarrassing. A boxer with skill is one that can kill, and Marciano would be in way over his head on this one. I just know that he showed major skill inside the boxing ring...more than Marciano could ever dream of having.

As for the action: Marciano would always come at Tyson with all that he has. Rocky has a tremendous heart (Bluedevil once referred to Rock as 'The man who refused to lose'...only, Tyson has tremendous power. Rocky may have power, but not as strong as Tyson. Marciano may have been undefeated, but the greats he fought weren't in their primes anymore. He fought an ancient Archie Moore, a washed-up Joe Walcott, and an aged Joe Louis. You have to give him credit for handling Ezzard Charles, though. He was an explosive fighter! The only problem is his heart. His heart will only take him so far against Tyson's power. Rocky charges towards you. That kind of style is a puncher's favorite since he doesn't need to chase the man across the ring and waste his stamina. Just look at what happened to Morales when he kept charging at Pacman. As for Tyson, he only charges towards you when he knows he can. He may not have been all that book-smart, but he was ring-smart. He wouldn't charge towards Rocky, or the tide would turn in Rocky's favor. Tyson would hit Marciano with power shots from afar. After wearing him down, Tyson will go inside and then upststairs. Then, it will be lights out for Rocky.

    Tyson KO Round 11.

  4. heart is the major factor in this fight, and the rock had it in abundance , did he give up after being outboxed by walcott for 12 rounds, or getting his nose busted by charles in the rematch?

tyson  probably had quicker reflexes, but he didn't like it when someone fought back, and rocky never backed down, so i pick marciano to win by the 10th round.

  5. toe to toe tyson will take marciano out. tyson had trouble with movement .

  6. rocky marciano

  7. Rocky could win this but certainly NOT AS IS.  He could not win as he fought Walcott.  IT's unrealistic to think he would even train that way.

It's very easy to hate Mike Tyson and it also seems to be the popular thing to do, especially on this site.  Though I can understand some of the reasons I tend to view the champions ONLY as they were IN THE RING during their best years.

It's also very hard to go against Rocky Marciano.  He's very popular here.  He's one of my favorite champions too.  OVER ALL Marciano may well always be ranked above Tyson.  It's hard to argue with a perfect record and a high knockout percentage to go with it.

Both Marciano and Tyson have flaws.  Ordinarially it would depend on which man could exploit the other's flaws.  Pound for Pound Marciano is certainly the better champion.  However, it's the Pounds that would be the telling factor in this fight.  Marciano just doesn't have enough of them.

There are a few ways to view this fight.  It requries a realistic approach.  IN THE RING Tyson would simply have too many physical advantages.  It's true that size and weight are not always the most telling factors in a fight.   It's also true that Rocky defeated men who weigh over 200lbs.  However, none of  them had anywhere near Tyson's talent.

As They Are, in the Walcott and Spinks fights respectively,  The edge would have to go to Tyson.   He weigh 216lbs. to Rocky's 188lbs.  28 pounds isn't much when the better fighter is smaller and you're talking about heavyweights.  Rocky could beat guys of that weight range.  However, these guys would not be in the punching range of Tyson.

Mike is in the class with guys like Forman, Shavers and LIston.  The difference is that he is much faster than all of them.   Rocky certainly has power.  He's extremely strong for his size.  However, there is a limit to how far his strength, endurance and heart will take him against certain opponents.  He could beat guys like Greg Page, Tony Tubbs or some of the later day heavyweights.   These guys carry weight.  However, they don't punch hard enough to do a lot of damage.  In the long run,  Rocky would grind guys like them down and, behind on points, stop them late.

Mike Tyson would simply be too fast and powerful for Rocky.  AS THEY ARE, Tyson would win before round 6.

The more realistic view would be to have them live and fight during the same era.  In this case Rocky would be a little bigger naturally.  Also, consider the fact that during his career, Rocky regularly walked around over 200lbs.  He would have to train differently to carry the weight in order to take the punishment.

Looking at the "AS IS" is really not the most realist approach because there are so many differences in today's boxing.  Rocky would come in at about 202lbs.  Now there would not be the great difference in size and strength.  Tyson would still be bigger.  There is no way Rocky could win at 188.  He often trained smaller for speed and mobility.  He wasn't as hard to hit as most think.

He never faced an opponent like Tyson.  Against Mike, Rocky would need the weight and added strength.  He would suffer a bit of stamina but still have the edge here.   Some fighters just have it like that.  Mike, even at his best, never had the best stamina.   After 6 rounds he becomes ordinary.  He will always take a punch.  He has one of the best chins ever.  His output diminishes drastically after the mid rounds.

Rocky often missed a lot of punches but never stopped throwing them.  HIs stamina was among the best, esp. when you consider the amount of energy you burn when you miss punches.  Late round power would have to go to Rocky.

Rocky would train to come in at about 202.  Mike would be around his usual 216.  Rocky would take a beating early.  He would have to do a lot of clinching to survive Mike's early onslaught.  Rocky would go down twice in the first three rounds.  He would land his share of blows as well.

Tyson has the better chin.  He has never been knocked down from any single punch.  The body shot Holyfield dropped him with was more the result of Mike's already poor balance.  The rest were in the late rounds after Mike had nothing left and after an accumilation of punishment.  Mike won't go down early here.

After failing to finish Marciano early, Tyson drops down a gear.  In the 4th Rocky begins to do something none of Mike's opponents did with any real success.  He works Mike's body while wisely staying inside, thus taking away the range of Mike's punches.   Both men are well known for "Extra Activity" on the inside.  An elbow here or there is not out of the ordinary.  Marciano begins to stand his ground.

By round 7 Rocky begins to regularly back Tyson up.  He suffers another knockdown in round 8 but it's clear that Mike, who is well ahead on points, is beginning to slow down while Rocky is now pouring it on.

In round 10 Tyson is hurt for the first time.  A series of body shots sets up a short left hook to the chin and, as he backs up, a solid right to the head.  Tyson backs to the ropes and Rocky is trying to finish him.  Mike fights back but his energy level is low.   His punches lack the steam of the early rounds.  At the bell Mike is taking heavy punishment.

Marciano has a cut above his left eye.  Tyson has swelling around the his left eye as well.  He is unable to see the looping rights coming his way.  Rocky backs Mike into a corner.  It looks like Mike should be able to shove him off but he doesn't have the energy.

In round 12 a solid right to the side of the head cause Mike to wobble.  Rocky is working the body and head.  Mike fires back but not very frequently.  The referee is watching closely.  A solid right to the chin cause Tyson to drop his guard.  He sags to the ropes and a left to the jaw puts him in the corner.  A few more solid unanswered punches and the referee stops it.

    Marciano by TKO in 12

That would be the more realistic view.  If they fought AS IS with Marciano coming in at 188:

    Tyson by KO in 4

  8. tyson
