Rod Brind'Amour accepts new role with Carolina Hurricanes
Former Carolina Hurricanes captain Rod Brind’Amour has been named to the position of director of forwards development with the Carolina hockey club.
Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford described the position, saying “he will develop some players who are not on the big club but he will also develop and work on some things he’s noticed with the players with the big club. He’ll be on the ice at training camp under the direction of the coaching staff. During the season he will attend most games in Raleigh when he’s not travelling to Charlotte [American Hockey League affiliate] to work with the players there.”
Rutherford continued, praising Brind’Amour, “It is important for our team to have the most accomplished players like Rod stay with the organization. Rod is already displaying the same work ethic and dedication in his new role as he did with us as a player.”
Brind’Amour announced his retirement in June after a 20-year career. Brind’Amour, captained the Hurricanes to the franchises only Stanley Cup victory in 2006. He also spent time with the St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers .
At the time of his retirement, Brind’Amour had one year remaining on a five-year deal with the Hurricanes. He was facing a reduced role with the ‘Canes this year and had this to say about his decision, “…when I knew for sure the direction the team was going and I wasn’t going to be a part of it as a player, I said ‘I’m done. It’s over.’ I don’t want to play any more and certainly don’t want to play anywhere else.”
Brind’Amour finished his NHL career ranked 16th all time in games played(1484), scoring 1184 points during that time(452 goals, 732 assists). He was also one of the most prolific players in Carolina franchise history, ranking second in assists(299), third in points(473) and fourth in games played(694) while playing for the Hurricanes.
In his new position, Brind’Amour will join, Glen Wesley, Ron Francis, and Tom Barasso as former Carolina players who have joined the club’s management team.
