Rod Lawler appreciates John Higgins for his performance in 1996 World Snooker Championship
England’s Rod Lawler started his career in 1990 and played convincingly in the snooker events of 1990-1991 Snooker Season. The Englishman emerged as an average snooker player but he evolved into a brilliant talent with the passage of time. He gave many memorable
performances during mid and late 90s and grabbed some noticeable performances.
However, he still was unable to win any major ranking snooker tournament and claimed some minor events. One of his impressive performances was seen in the 1996 World Snooker Championship where he managed to reach the second round of the tournament. He was
impressive on the baize and defeated the likes of Dennis Taylor and John Parrott which was impressive from his side.
Meanwhile, there was another element which impressed Lawler was an amazing performance from one of the emerging youngsters, John Higgins. The Scottish potter played outstandingly in the 1996 World Snooker Championship and made his way into the quarter-final
stage of the tournament where he was up against another youngster, Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Both potters had a tussling game in the quarter-final stage and reached 12-12 level. The Englishman, O’Sullivan, managed to win the final frame to claim the quarter-final victory by the score line of 13-12. Lawler, in his recent interview with Pro Snooker
Blog, relived his memories of the event and appreciated the Scotsman for his impressive performance.
He spoke, “It was obvious how good John was, it was blatantly obvious that he was going to be world number one, world champion, he was that good, you could see it. Basically I did one or two things wrong early in the match and John was just gone, that’s
how good he was and still is.”
He added, “It was very obvious then but I’d just love to be able to play the likes of John and Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Williams in the TV stages more and to be honest I think I will play them more. I’m playing a lot more competitively now than I think
I have for five or six years.”
Lawler is now on his new season campaign which he started with his participation in the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker tournament. The Englishman is aiming to make an appearance in the upcoming snooker events.
