Rod Lawler appreciates new snooker calendar devised by WPBSA – Snooker News
Veteran potter from England, Rod Lawler, booked his place in the professional circuit after putting up an excellent snooker display in the 2012 World Snooker Qualifying School (Q School). He is now on the pro tour and is happy that he will not have to play
many qualifiers because World Snooker added many new events in the recent calendar.
In his recent interview with the Pro Snooker Blog, Lawler said, “We had blocks of qualifiers at places like the Norbreck Castle. You had literally between 8-10 ranking tournaments a season and you went to Blackpool and played in groups of five qualifiers
twice a year. If you lost in all five qualifying tournaments, you basically drove away from Blackpool for six months.”
He further added, “It was certainly different then. Snooker has come on a long way since. Our calendar now is brilliant because we have all got so much snooker to play in and I don’t think that anyone in their right mind can complain about the calendar now.”
World Snooker Chairman, Barry Hearn came to the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield during the final proceedings of the 2012 World Snooker Championship and made some important announcement about the upcoming season calendar. During his press conference, Hearn
announced that the snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association has made some additions in the new snooker calendar.
The Association added some new events in the calendar with the objective to create more opportunities for new talent so that they can experience the professional atmosphere. Several of the potters did not like this new addition as they thought it would not
let the players have some spare time for their families and friends. Former four-time World Snooker Championship winners, John Higgins and Ronnie O’Sullivan were two of them.
However, there were players who really supported and appreciated the initiative as they reckoned that the concept will give a chance to the cuemen to develop their professional skills by taking part in as many snooker events as they can. They also believed
that this will definitely change the financial conditions of many players.
