Rod Lawler beats Luca Brecel to move forward in 2012 Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers
World Snooker Academy in Sheffield is once again full of potters from around the world who are giving their best to book their place in the Last 32 round of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open. Recently in the opening round of the Aussie event qualifying
session, veteran potter Rod Lawler defeated the Belgian youngster Luca Brecel by the score line of 5-4 to move one step close to his goal.
The first round qualifier match-up between the Englishman and the Belgian potter was one of the toughest competitions so far which ended in a decider frame.
The experienced Lawler was at the brink of quitting from snooker quite recently but he came back reconsidering his decision and has now got a superb start in the new snooker season. He played superbly in the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker event qualifiers and
reserved his place in the wild card round.
On the other hand, Brecel had a stunning start in the 2012 Wuxi Classic event but was unable to qualify for the televised stages. However, reaching the opening round of the 2012 World Snooker Championship after winning four qualifying matches has given a
lot of confidence to the young Belgian. Nevertheless, the youngster failed to make his presence felt at the arena and tumbled down.
Brecel had a strong start in the qualifier and grabbed an early lead of 0-2 after clinching the first two sets. Despite slipping two frames down, Lawler did not feel any pressure and bounced back into the game with some outstanding breaks of 59, 70 and 72
to move one frame up at 3-2. This was a very alarming situation for the young Belgian cueman as he was looking to beat his opponent quickly.
The next two frames were crucial but Brecel could win only one and the other went into Lawler’s favour to shift the score board to 4-3. Brecel played impressively in the eighth frame and pulled level by the score line of 4-4 to drag the game into a decisive
frame.
The final frame was all dominated by Lawler as he fired a terrific clearance of 85 to ensure his victory. He will next meet Mark Joyce in the second round of the qualifying session.
