Rod Lawler impressive against Stephen Maguire in Round 1 of 2012 Wuxi Classic
England’s Rod Lawler made his way into the second round of the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker tournament after making an impressive appearance in the opening round of the event at the Wuxi Sports Center in Wuxi, China against the Scottish cueman, Stephen Maguire.
Putting up an excellent snooker display at the Wuxi baize against Maguire, Lawler was able to register his first victory by the score line of 5-4.
While speaking to World Snooker after the victory, Lawler said, “I think I have just made one of the best clearances of my career so I'm really pleased with how I played. It's tough for the top players because I feel like I've played for a couple of months
already, but I'm really proud of the clearance and I'm really delighted to beat a player of Stephen's quality.”
The Englishman added, “The venue's absolutely excellent. The tables and the conditions are playing really well.”
The opening round clash between Lawler and Maguire was one of the most tussling encounters where both potters did not make any silly mistakes and played sensibly in order to nudge each other down. The Scotsman was pushed to his limits in the first session
of the match when the Englishman cruised into two frames lead by the score line of 3-1.
Maguire was under a lot of pressure because Lawler was not giving him any chances to capitalise in the game. However, the Scot bounced back into the match with some tremendous snooker genius as he claimed the fifth frame to move one up at 3-2. However, it
was not enough as the Englishman followed him right away with a classy sixth frame win to reach 4-2.
Maguire was at the brink of losing the game by 5-2 but he showed great determination and courage to hit back-to-back frame wins and pulled level at 4-4. At this point, a real tussle between the two potters began as both of them were trying to grab a sound
lead to win the match.
Maguire compiled a 39-point break but missed his chance to build a big break to let Lawler on the table as he never missed a chance and claimed the match victory by 5-4 firing a tremendous break of 77 points.
