Rod McQueen may leave Melbourne Rebels after last round match - Super Rugby news
Melbourne Rebels’ coach, Rod McQueen, is reported to be parting from his team after the end of current Super Rugby season. The Rebels are left with their final game in the championship, against the Western Force, on June 17. McQueen is expected to make an
official announcement of his retirement after their last match of the current season.
Tricky Rod McQueen took over the newly established Melbourne Rebels early this year as a challenge but failed to make any progress with the derby. The Rebels remained unimpressive throughout the tournament and have been placed exactly at the bottom of the
Super Rugby point tables. The Rebels grabbed only three victories in the tournament after 15 outgoings.
Rod McQueen has a long career of coaching and has remained highly successful in his techniques. He was the man who guided the Australians to lift the Rugby World Cup in 1999. Earlier on he has worked with the Waratahs and ACT Brumbies as head coach before
he was given charge of Wallabies national team in 1995. He has also worked as selector for the Australian team in 1994-95.
The spokesman for the Melbourne Rebels revealed today that McQueen will not be with the team after the end of the current Super Rugby championship. Although McQueen denied any such story, the team management of the Rebels is convinced about his departure.
McQueen shifted his conversation and said that we are only looking for our last match of the season at the moment.
He added that, “This week we really want to concentrate on the last game, obviously it's going to be very important to us. But next week we will be announcing exactly what's happening. We like to do things our way, we're looking to see how that's going to
work.”
He further said that, “There's been some very good positives to come out of the first year, we've done a lot of things right off the field and got a very good presence in Melbourne.”
The possible departure of Rod McQueen would add an injury to the insult of struggling Rebels.
