  1. If you fished in salt water or polluted water I'd take the spool off and soak it in cool fresh water for about ten minutes - change the water and do another ten....wipe down the pole with a wet rag wringing it out to get any dirt or chemicals off of it.  Then I'd wipe down the outside of the reel and maybe put a little grease inside where the spool goes - just a little then work the bail a few times moving the grease around...

shake out the spool to get most of the water out of it... then I'd reinstall it on the reel and put the lower half of your rod upside down so any remaining water will drain away from your reel and drip on the ground....

  2. 1.spray it all off with the water hose at first.

2.take the spool off and submerge it in water for a few minutes to get the grim/salt/whatever you dont want out of the inside of the line so it won't become brittle and break when you have the "big one" on.

3.take 3-1 oil and put that on the spool rod and the gears of the reel.

4.spray WD-40 on the other parts of the reel and on all the eyes of the rod.

  3. If you fish saltwater you will need to clean it after each trip to prevent any corrosion which happens QUICKLY with saltwater, if its fresh water then about once a month or after the trip if the item has been submerged in water, to clean your rod a damp cloth with a  little mild detergent should work great, make sure you clean in the rod guides, then run a  cloth with just warm water over the rod, then dry the rod and store in a safe place. For your reel you need to take it apart, apply oil to the ball bearing and the brass drag system, but not to the drag washers, if you use a bait cast reel apply some synthetic oil to the level wind to keep it running smoothly, good oil to try is ardent reel oil or even better quantum Hot Sauce.

Also to clean your rods when out on the water you can use the car interior wipes, such as armor wipes. Dont use soap on the cork handles, just warm water and let it dry. Armor wipes, dont use them all the time as it can leave some rod blanks greasy, for any one who fly fishes these are good for cleaning floating lines, they will keep them slick and floating.

  4. Everytime I fish I'll spray down the rod with a hose, and about every third time I fish, I'' spray down the rod setup let it dry then oil the reel and then with the rag I cleaned the reel with, I'll wipe the rod and eyelets down.

I use 3 in1 oil or gun oil to lube my reels.

  5. Just use a rag and water so you don't damage your gear.
