Rod Spittle, Mark Calcavecchia and Lee Rinker share lead in the second round of Senior British Open
Rod Spittle, Mark Calcavecchia and Lee Rinker smashed a score of seven-under-par in the second round of the Senior British Open to surge into a midway lead. The first major of the Champions Tour is taking place at the Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England.
Rod, who hails from Canada, teed-off from the front and reeled two birdies against two bogeys to seal the half at par. However, things took a turn as soon as he stepped onto the back nine, which is relatively difficult as compared to the first half. The
veteran fired two sets of birdies with a gap of one green starting from the par-5 11th and wrapped the day with a 67.
Rinker, who caught five birdies without dropping a single shot, produced a much better scorecard. The American improved folds, as compare to his opening round, which shows how well he has adapted to the Walton Health.
Meanwhile, Calcavecchia carded six birdies against three bogeys to post a score of 69. The American was pleased to be in the lead for the second day and hoped to improve his game further.
“I played well for the most part - not too many crooked drives, I'm putting pretty good, not too many mistakes. So far so good,” said Calcavecchia while speaking to reporters.
The 1989 British Open winner, Calcavecchia is thinking of joining the great trio of Hall of Famers, Tom Watson, Bob Watson and Gary Player, in becoming the only golfer ever to win both the British Open and the Senior British Open.
“That would be awesome company to keep,” he said. “They're three Hall of Famers. That would be really special. I don't see why not, but there's a long way to go.”
The 51-year-old was followed by Peter Fowler. The Aussie made a superb comeback in the second round after sealing the first round with a 71. The veteran picked six birdies against two bogeys to drag his score into the realms of par.
John Cook and Mike Goodes finished three strokes shy from the leaders. Cook produced a bogey-less scorecard and reeled five birdies in the day.
