Rod Thorn terms Lawrence Frank as the perfect Head Coach for Detroit Pistons – NBA Update
With the Detroit Pistons all set to offer Lawrence Frank a position as their new head coach, Rod Thorn, the ex-President of the New Jersey Nets and Frank’s former boss, expressed high praise for the former New Jersey Nets coach.
“I think it would be a great choice, really, a great choice," explicated Rod Thorn. "Lawrence is a terrific coach. I believe he and Joe (Dumars, Pistons president) would work really well together. I'm really happy for him and I
think he would be a great choice.”
Thorn removed Frank as the New Jersey Nets head coach in 2009, after a dismal 0-16 start to the season. However, even then Thorn held Frank in high regard. And he continues to do so.
“Lawrence will do really well. He knows what he is doing. No one ever outworks him. He always is prepared, has his team prepared for any scenario," Thorn added. "The guy can coach.”
According to Thorn, he fired Frank at a time when things were not really under Frank’s control. He explained that the Nets had no real talent at that time. The 0-16 start was not reflective of Frank’s potential and he cannot be
blamed for it.
It is expected that Joe Dumars will extend an offer to Frank by the end of this week, to replace the fired John Kuester.
After being fired by the Nets, this will be Franks’ first job as head coach. Last year, he acted as an assistant to Doc Rivers, the Boston Celtics head coach. According to Frank, it was a wonderful experience and he learned a lot
from Doc.
Frank is best known as a solid defensive coach and is expected to help the Detroit Pistons in this much needed department. Previously, he had replaced Byron Scott as the New Jersey Nets coach in 2004 and achieved an amazing 13-0
start to his Nets career, the most by any coach, in the four most widely played sports in the United States.
His most notable achievement with the Nets came about in the form of four playoff entries, three Eastern Conference Semi finals berths and two Atlantic Division titles.
However, this sensational start was eventually met by a grotesque end, primarily due to the muddle created by a series of cost cutting moves that left Frank with little to nothing in terms of talent.
Frank has expressed his desire to leave the past behind and perform his level best to help the Detroit Pistons reach new heights. His former boss’ praise will not only help Frank gain confidence in himself, but will also strengthen
the chances of Frank receiving a contract from the Pistons by the end of the week.
