A major upset at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, when the world number one duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan of the Unites States of defeated by their fellow compatriots, the unseeded team of Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish in the quarter-final
round.
Being played at the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy, the combination of Roddick and Fish put up a great performance to outplay the top seeded pair in an exciting three-setter, 4-6, 7-6(1), 10-4, taking one hour and thirty two minutes
to make it to the semi-finals of the clay-court event.
The all-American affair took place on Friday, with Roddick and Fish registering their third victory as a pair to advance to the semis of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 1000 event. The top ranked duo of
Bryan Brothers were regarded as the hot favourite for winning the tournament but an outstanding display of professional tennis from their opponents ejected them in the quarter-final stage.
The Bryan brothers had an excellent start to the contest and took no time in getting their hold on the game by winning the opener convincingly. Their game slumped in the following set as Roddick and Fish bounced back strongly in
the second set tie breaker to level the match with one set a piece. It all came down to the decider and the winning pair brought out its best to root out the top seeded duo.
The big Roddick serve was dominant throughout the contest, as 10 aces were registered by his team, facing just five from the Bryan brothers. Roddick and Fish had eight break chances in the game but they converted just one of them
en route to victory. The Bryans hung in throughout the contest and played brilliant tennis to give a tough time to their opponents but they frittered away some crucial opportunities, which wore them out later in the match.
Bob and Mike were bang on target in the opener, racing through the set by winning 20 of 25 serve points and registering one serve break. They sealed the first set at 6-4 to get the upper hand in the competition but a tremendous
come back from Roddick and Fish stunned them in the second set. They continued to push the Bryan Brothers in the decisive third set as well and allowed just three points to them before concluding an emphatic victory at 10-4.
Roddick and Fish will now take on the team of Carlos Berlocq from Argentina and Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in the semi-final round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Saturday. Berlocq and Nieminen defeated the seventh seeded
pair of Michael Llodra of France and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia to reach the semi-finals.
