http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 manager, Brendan Rodgers, has admitted that his side still needs to go a long way to qualify for the Champions League, following their humiliating loss to Aston Villa on Saturday.
The Merseyside outfit were thumped 3-1 at Anfield in a match in which they failed to create major goal scoring opportunities despite dominating the play. The visitors, though, made the most of the chances that fell their way, opening up a three-goal lead
inside the first hour.
Benteke, in particular, was exceptional for the Villans, as he netted a brace and played a wonderful back heel inside the Reds box to also set up a goal for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andreas-Weimann-c5768.
The consolation for Liverpool came late on from skipper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Glen-Johnson-c15050 shot outside the box.
The defeat once again derailed the Reds recent short-lived revival. It was just their second defeat in the last 12 league matches. It was also their third loss at Anfield this campaign, having earlier being seconded by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 and Manchester United at the
Stadium.
The Anfield chief has insisted that the loss against a team involved in a relegation battle should serve as a wake-up call for his side.
The Ulsterman said that it was an indication of the amount of work that still needed to be done before they can realize their ambitions of finishing inside the top-four.
Before the match on Saturday, Rodgers had claimed that Liverpool were vying for the second spot.
“That was probably as disappointing as we've been here but I couldn't put my finger on it,” he told the reporters.
“It is a strange thing football. We were talked up all week about us being top-four material but we know within the group we still have a long way to go.”
“There is going to be steady progress and there are going to be steps forward, like in the last few weeks, and a step backward like yesterday.”
The manager then further added that his side were guilty of complacency, and need to tighten the screws before their next match against Fulham.
